Home International Selection Policy 2011 (provisional)

The Welsh Amateur Rowing Association has adopted the following selection policy for the selection of rowers, coxes and coaches for the Home International Regatta 2011.

1. Eligibility

Rowers and coxes must fulfil one of the following:

  • Having been born in Wales.
  • Having a parent or grandparent born in Wales
  • Having resided for not less than six consecutive months in Wales and having been a member of a rowing club therein during that time.
  • Where a rower lives in Home Country A and rows in Home Country B actively for more than 6 months that athlete may opt once to row for either country.
  • Where a rower has competed for Wales before

2. Registration and Trials

Senior, Junior, and Adaptive Women

Registration for open trials of the Senior, Junior and Adaptive Women’s Team will close at the Women’s Head of the River.

Open trials will be held for the Senior and Junior Women on TBC (approx March/April 2011). Venue to be confirmed.

Senior, Junior and Adaptive Men

Registration for open trials of the Senior, Junior and Adaptive Men’s Team will close at the Head of the River.

Open trials will be held for the Senior and Junior Men on TBC (approx March/April 2011). Venue to be confirmed.

Ergo Targets

Ergo tests should be carried out on Concept II machines and either at a public event or witnessed by the Welsh National Coach or nominated coach before the date of the open trials for each relevant team. An ergo score is to be submitted and independently verified. Anyone who does not submit an ergo score will be expected to complete one the day before their relevant trial.

Lightweights

Weights for Lightweights at the Home International Regatta are as follows:

Objectives for open trials

Trials will be held in 1x and/or 2-
To establish a ranking of rowers
To form potential combinations
To gain invitation to closed trials

Any individual entering and competing at the open trials will be expected to Row or Scull in combinations decided by The National High Performance Development Coach for division 2 based on results from division 1.

Individuals are encouraged to race in combinations formed at trials or as part of their club or university where their performances can be monitored. Based on performances at the open trials up to 8 men and women, both Juniors and Seniors, will be invited to Gent regatta.

Henley Women's Regatta GB Trials
Henley Royal Regatta J16 1x, 2x or 2- events at the Junior Inter-Regional Regatta

Trials by Invitation

Rowers will be invited to closed trials based on their performances during the summer. Closing date for registration is 48 hours before final trials.

  • Junior and Senior Women’s trials will commence on TBC
  • Junior and Senior Men’s trials will commence on TBC

Selection of Coxes

Registered coxes will be expected to attend open and closed trials.

Coxes will be selected by the following criteria:

  • Feedback from rowers
  • Geographical location
  • Ability to work with the relevant coordinator
  • Ability to work with the relevant crew coach.
  • Availability to attend training sessions.

Selection of Coaches

The individual team coordinators based on experience and their ability to work with the selected crews and the coordinators can recommend coaches. The selection panel at the National Championships makes final selection. All coaches will require a CRB check.

Final Selection

Selection for the Home International Team will be dependant on performance at the National Championships. Top performing Welsh eligible crews will be selected who have finished in the top 3 where there are more than 6 entries. If crews are not in the top 3 or where there are less than 6 entries the selection panel will pick crews from the best available Rowers.

Individual rowers who have not taken part in the selection process but have registered and performed at the National Championships, may be considered where there are unselected boat types following final selection. Coordinators are under no obligation to select an individual who chooses not to take part in the selection process during the year.

Following the National Championships the relevant team coordinators will submit their crew selection to the International Committee members for scrutiny. Upon approval final selection will be made public.

  • The senior teams comprise a maximum of 14 athletes plus cox.
  • The junior teams comprise a maximum of 14 athletes plus coxes.

Adaptive Events

An adaptive rower is a rower with a disability who meets the criteria set out in the classification regulations for the Home International Regatta.

The TA (Truck and Arms) class is for rowers who have trunk movement but who are unable to use the sliding seat to propel the boat because of significantly weakened function in the lower limbs.

Eligible TA rowers would typically have a minimum disability equivalent to at least one of the following:

  • Bilateral around knee amputation or impaired quadriceps.
  • Neurological impairment equivalent to a complete lesion at L3 level or and incomplete lesion at L1.
  • A combination of the above such as one leg with around knee amputation and one leg with quadriceps impairment.
  • Classification by the international sports federation for athletes with cerebral palsy (CP-ISRA) as eligible to be in CP class 5. (GB Rowing Performance Strategy Adaptive Rowing Programme – 2009 Season) Nov 2008.

The truck and arms rowers shall be secured with a strap to prevent flexion or extension of the knee(s) during rowing. The strap must be secured under the seat or rails and over the thighs, as close to the knees as possible. Self -inflating or other floatation devices may be worn.

The race distance for the adaptive events is 1000m. Rowers will use a standard boat as outlined by the Home International Committee. Boats will be supplied by the Welsh Rowing.

The team manager on behalf of the Welsh Rowing will undertake technical classification. Medical classification is the responsibility of the rower. Rowers in need of advice can approach the Welsh Rowing in the first instance.

4. Exemptions and Exceptional Circumstances

Rowers who are unable to attend open assessments due to medical or other reasons may be invited to closed trials provided they inform the relevant coordinator as soon as possible and are considered of suitable standard. Rowers attending final GB trials and who later become available may be considered for the HIR despite not attending closed trials and are advised to register for the team by the deadlines set out in paragraph 2.

6. Appeals

Any Welsh Rowing registered rower has the right to appeal against a decision made by the team coordinator in respect of the implementation of the Welsh Rowing selection policy in so far as it relates to that rower.
