The Welsh Rowing and Sports Leaders UK Rowing Leader Award has been created to provide Young Leaders with the opportunity to develop sports leadership skills to support their club coaches in delivering effective and engaging rowing sessions.
The Award consists of 6 hours training (2 x 3hr workshops) with a number of tasks to be completed in the leaders own time, pre, during and post course. Topics include:
- Role, skills, knowledge and behaviours of a rowing leader
- Rowing safety
- Warming up and cooling down
- Recognising and demonstrating the correct rowing technique
- Planning, delivering and evaluating rowing activity
There is no formal assessment for this Award however leaders will be encouraged to positively contribute throughout and will receive feedback from their tutor on their performance. There are two targeted age ranges for groups 11-15 and 16-18.

Indoor Rowing Workshop
The aim of this workshop by Welsh Rowing is to teach individuals the right skills and knowledge, so that they can introduce safe and effective indoor rowing sessions for everyone. The workshops are open to anyone to participate in regardless of ability as the rowing machines can be adapted in multiple ways including fixed seats, frames to replace the slide or audio commentary can even be provided via apps which accommodate for a wide variety of people with disabilities.
This four hour workshop will enhance the knowledge of coaches delivering indoor rowing sessions in gyms, schools and rowing clubs to ensure that participants are given high quality training sessions, promoting good technique and a lifetime in the sport. Our objectives are that you will:
- Learn how to set up the rowing machine correctly
- Understand what correct rowing technique is and the key points
- Know how to coach the basics of indoor rowing following British Rowing Technique
- Understand general maintenance of the indoor rowing machine
- Have awareness of how to progress knowledge and opportunities in rowing
- Have knowledge of inclusivity within indoor rowing
DIT (Disability Inclusion Traning)
Provides a basic introduction to inclusive practice aimed at all of those who are looking to make sport and physical activity sessions more inclusive.
Safeguarding Children – this workshop will raise your awareness of the tell-tale signs of abuse and give you the tools and confidence you need to deal with any issues sensitively, appropriately and effectively should the need ever arise in your coaching career.
